Queens Zoo’s Spangles gets younger mate

AGING bear Spangles is getting a young French lover in a last-ditch bid to get her to breed.

Spangles, a 23-year-old Andean bear at Queens Zoo, will be teamed up with Bouba, who isn’t even fully sexually mature yet, but will replace 21-year-old Cisco.

Zoo officials acknowledged that Bouba may be Spangles’ last hope for motherhood before entering the bear equivalent of menopause.

“There’s a very remote chance she will get pregnant,” said Scott Silver, curator at the zoo, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society. “We’re still hopeful. If there is an opportunity, we will bring in a younger female.”
