Max Irons – my parents cut me off when I was 18

ACTOR Max Irons was cut off financially by his wealthy and famous parents when he was just 18 – but he says it’s the best thing that could have happened to him.

Model-turned-actor Max, the son of Dalkey-born actress Sinead Cusack and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons, was forced to work long hours in a minimum wage job at a local pub.

Recalling the “tough love” measure, Irons, best known for the movie “The Host”, says: “I was the head bartender. I was dead good. We didn’t get paid enough — we don’t get tips in England — so we would steal Champagne!”

Having famous parents hasn’t really opened doors for him in Hollywood, claims Irons. In fact, some casting agents have treated him with outright suspicion.

“People are wary of you when you go into an audition, certainly in the early days,” he says. “They would go, ‘Who is this little upstart?’ So you really have to bring it.

“Otherwise, if you don’t, they will say, ‘Oh, there he is, trying to get in on his parents’ coattails’ and they will shut you down because of it.”

Handsome Irons, 28, who is shortly to move to America to further his acting career, has just finished filming “Posh,” a movie based on a play by Laura Wade, about two Oxford University students who join the notorious Riot Club.

The Riot Club is based on the real-life and boisterous Bullingdon Club, an exclusive society at Oxford University, noted for its grand banquets and wild rituals.

Mum Sinead Cusack and dad Jeremy Irons made a point of not exposing the young Max to movie sets. They actively discouraged him from acting, viewing it as a difficult career path.

“They kept me well out of it,” he says. “Then, when they saw I was serious, they backed off.”
