John Patrick Shanley receives lifetime achievement award

CELEBRATED Irish playwright John Patrick Shanley is to receive a lifetime achievement award in acknowledgement to his services to Irish writing.

Shanley, whose father emigrated to America from Co. Westmeath, will receive the Eugene O’Neill Lifetime Achievement Award later this month at a gala dinner in New York.

The 63-year-old writer, who has previously won an Oscar – for the movie Moonstruck – and also a Pulitzer Prize, was thrilled and a little surprised at the accolade.

He said modestly: “I was asked to speak by the Irish American Writers & Artists group when Bill (William) Kennedy won and it probably ended up being an audition to get one myself.

“I think they thought I was entertaining. Maybe that’s how you get a Lifetime Achievement Award.  I don’t know.”
